Sri Lanka Family Tour: A Memorable Journey

We all dream of the ‘perfect’ family vacation: sharing memories around the campfire or at a candlelit dinner, laughing children on a sunrise hike, quality time spent teaching them how to start a fire, or simply relaxing in nature. The Parkers—David (42), Sarah (39), Emma (12), and Noah (8)—experienced this on their fantastic two-week trip to Sri Lanka from July 15 to 29, 2024. Their story is filled with discovery, laughter, cultural experiences, and the magic that comes from a family exploring a new place.

At TripxAsia, we want to share their true experience to inspire your family adventure on this beautiful island.

Sri Lanka Family Tour: First Impressions in Colombo

As soon as the Parkers stepped off their flight at Bandaranaike International Airport, they felt a warm, moist breeze and saw the friendly smiles of the Sri Lankan people. “We felt right at home from the beginning,” Sarah says. “Even at the airport, people were so kind and helpful with the kids.”

On their first day in Colombo, the family experienced a mix of excitement and culture shock. The busy streets, colourful tuk-tuks weaving between cars and buses, and the strong smells of spices mixed with salty sea air overwhelmed their senses. Emma loved the street vendors selling fresh king coconuts, while Noah enjoyed spotting the bright murals on the city walls.

In July, the weather added its own touch. They experienced brief but heavy tropical storms from the monsoon season in the afternoons. These storms didn’t dampen their spirits; instead, they added to their adventure. “When it rained, we would duck into little cafes and try new snacks,” David recalled. “So many of those spontaneous moments became our favorites.”

The Journey Unfolds: From Colombo to Kandy to Galle

Colombo: Where Modern Meets Traditional

The Parkers spent the first three days of their vacation in Sri Lanka’s capital, Colombo. They wandered through Pettah Market, where Emma bargained with local shopkeepers. They also visited the peaceful Gangaramaya Temple, which amazed Noah with its giant Buddha statues and many elephant decorations.

At the National Museum, they taught their children about Sri Lanka’s history while David and Sarah enjoyed the cultural experience. One night, the family tried their first Sri Lankan crab curry. This dish quickly became Noah’s favourite. Sarah laughed, “I didn’t think my 8-year-old would like the spicy crab, but he asked for it almost every day.”

Kandy: The Cultural Heart

Kandy is a UNESCO-recognized cultural site. Travelling to Kandy is special in itself, especially when taking the scenic train ride from Colombo. The family enjoyed window seats, watching the city turn into beautiful hills of tea and misty mountains. During the three-hour trip, Emma took photos while Noah made friends with a local family in their train compartment.

Their visit coincided with the Esala Perahera, one of Asia’s most amazing cultural festivals. For ten nights, they saw elephants dressed in extravagant costumes, traditional dancers, and fire performers parading through the streets. “Week after week, the kids talked about those elephants,” David says. “It was magical to see their faces light up.”

They stayed at The Elephant Stables, a boutique hotel in Dambulla with stunning views. The hotel had a pool and a large garden, where the kids could play while the parents relaxed. The staff even organised a cooking class where the Parkers learned to make traditional Sri Lankan string hoppers and dhal curry.

A memorable moment was their visit to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy. Despite the busy surroundings, the family felt calm and at peace. A friendly monk spoke with Emma and Noah about the temple using gestures and smiles that crossed any language barrier. Galle: Coastal Charm and Historical Wonder

The family’s journey took them south to Galle, a coastal city. They booked a room at Tamarind Hill, a lovely place on a mountain with an ocean view. The villa-style units offered privacy, and Noah’s favourite spot was the infinity pool.

Walking through Galle Fort felt like stepping back in time. The family walked along the ramparts at sunset and watched local boys jump off the fort walls into the turquoise waters below. They looked at colonial-era buildings that now had quirky cafes and art galleries. At Poonie’s Kitchen, they enjoyed what Sarah called “the most amazing rice and curry we ate during the entire trip.”

Best Hotels for Your Sri Lanka Family Tour

The Parkers looked for hotels that offered comfort, authenticity, and family-friendly amenities. They also found several great spots for families while exploring:

In Colombo, the kids had fun at the Sky Zone trampoline park in the Colombo City Centre one afternoon. They enjoyed evening walks along the Galle Face Green promenade, where they bought isso wadey (shrimp fritters) from beach vendors and watched the sunset.

In Kandy, there were many attractions, including the Royal Botanical Gardens, which entertained them for hours. The children ran through the palm avenue, were amazed by the giant Java fig tree, and laughed when they saw fruit bats hanging above them. Near their hotel, they visited the Udawatta Kele Sanctuary, a small nature reserve. They hiked there after taking off their shoes at an adjacent temple, spotting monkeys and exotic birds along the way and learning about Sri Lanka’s biodiversity from their guide, Chaminda.

Adventures Through a Child’s Eyes: Emma and Noah’s Favorites

Emma’s Top Moments (Age 12):

Emma wrote in her journal about her visit to the elephant orphanage in Pinnawala. She said, “We saw baby elephants playing in the river and learned how the sanctuary rescues orphaned elephants. I bought a small wood-carved elephant to remember them.”

She also loved the train ride through tea country to Nuwara Eliya, which they did as a day trip from Kandy. The train had no windows and no glass in the doors, so she could lean out and feel the breeze. Emma mentioned that her mom was worried, but her dad thought it was safe. The views were so beautiful that the photos didn’t do them justice.

Noah’s Adventures (Age 8):

Noah’s favorite part of the trip was the sea turtle hatchery in Kosgoda, on the way to Galle. He exclaimed, “I got to hold a baby turtle! It was tiny and tried to swim in my hands. They release them at night in the ocean to protect them from birds.”

Noah also tried new foods. He enjoyed crab curry, kottu roti (a Sri Lankan street dish with chopped bread, vegetables, and meat), fresh tropical fruits from roadside stands, and even liked hoppers (bowl-shaped pancakes).

Moments That Matter: Family Bonds Strengthened

The Parkers have many cherished memories from their travels, especially those moments when they made unexpected connections. One afternoon in Kandy, they took shelter from a surprise rainstorm in a small family-owned tea shop. There, the shop owner’s children, who were around Emma and Noah’s age, taught them a Sri Lankan clapping game. Despite the language differences, laughter united them.

“That hour in the tea shop reminded us why we travel,” Sarah says. “It’s more than just visiting places. It’s the human connections that your kids will remember forever.”

David shares that one of the best moments of their last evening in Galle was sitting on the fort wall watching the sunset. Emma said, “This is the best trip we have ever done.” Hearing that made him feel fulfilled as a parent.

The family also created small traditions during their trip. They wrote in their journals every evening, and Noah drew pictures of what he saw. They collected little rocks from each place they visited to fill a memory jar. These activities turned their vacation into a story they all helped create.

Your Family’s Story Awaits

The Parkers returned home with more than just souvenirs and photos. They came back with love for each other, new experiences for their children, and memories that would be told in the family for years to come.

“Travel changes you,” Sarah says. “We saw Emma grow in confidence and Noah become more curious. As parents, we started to slow down and enjoy the moments instead of just following guidebooks.”

Sri Lanka welcomed the Parkers with delicious food, beautiful views, and warmth. This island paradise can create lasting memories for your family, too. Whether you want to explore ancient temples, relax on beaches, see wildlife, or spend quality time together away from the daily routine, there’s something for everyone in Sri Lanka.
